There is a stretch of California coastline that photographers and locals talk about in a specific way. Not breathlessly, not like a travel brochure. More like a quiet acknowledgment that some places are just different and special. Montecito is one of those places.

Located just south of Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara County, Montecito sits along one of the most photographed coastlines in California. The light here does something particular in the hour before and after sunset. The Channel Islands sit offshore to the west, and when the sun drops behind them the sky opens up in ways that are genuinely difficult to capture and nearly impossible to forget.

I have been photographing the California coast for years. Montecito, specifically Butterfly Beach, is my favorite location. These four images are from different evenings along the same stretch of beach and bluff, and each one reflects something true about why this place holds up as a subject.

What makes Montecito different as a photography location

The coastline at Montecito offers a combination that is rare on the Southern California coast: mature cypress and palm trees at the water's edge, a wide open western exposure for sunset, and enough elevation change along the bluff to create varied compositions within a short distance. The result is a location that reads as both wild and refined, which is exactly what it is. The four images in this collection capture that range.
